Doug Gunsalus, Lead Pastor
What’s on your iPod?: Jack Johnson, Relient K, David Crowder, Tommy Emmanuel (check out the most amazing guitar playin’ in the world on youtube. Search for Tommy Emmanuel. You will be blown away!)
Favorite Books: Blue like Jazz by Donald Miller is still one of my favorites, Sex God by Rob Bell, and Crazy Love by Francis Chan. Oh my. Francis Chan is amazing.
Favorite Scripture: Phillipians 3:13b-14 “But one thing I do, forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to receive the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.”
Favorite Movies: Tough, but I would have to say Bruce Almighty, Click, The Truman Show, The Gladiator, The Matrix, Dumb and Dumber, Braveheart, and Tommy Boy.
Favorite Foods: Mexican and Steak. Sometimes I like to combine them! If I could have my favorite meal, I would probably have a Steak from the Rusty Barrel (in Ponca City), some poppas from Abuelo’s preceded by some chips and salsa from chili’s. Oh, man. Life would be fantastic (while saying fantastic use a foreign accent and you will get the idea.)
Favorite TV Shows: Sadly, I only watch a couple. Seinfeld (sorry) and Sportscenter. Although I have watched some episodes of the First 48 and CSI Miami as well as the office.
If you were stranded on an island what 3 luxury items would you bring?: Let’s start with a toilet. Oh yes. That would be first on my list. Secondly, I would take my grill. I love that thing. And finally, I would take a Hummer. I mean, what more do you need? I could probably build a hut of some sort and since it is an island, I am imagining that it would be nice all year round weather wise. I would probably even make my hut open air. Of course this is all with the understanding that I was by myself. If my wife came with me, I would have to give my wishes to her because what is mine is hers and what is hers is hers as she likes to say. Love you babe!
What is one moment that changed your life?: I was sitting in my bed reading my Bible when I was 23 years old. I felt God reveal to me that even though I claimed him as my savior, I was still living for myself. That night, I submitted to a calling to ministry that I had been fighting with for years. The next day I quit my job and started looking for a youth pastor position. Never could I have imagined that it would have led me into the arms of my wife, and brought me to South County to start a church. God is constantly blowing my mind!
Go to space, or go to the bottom of the ocean?: Space. It’s the final frontier! Seriously, there is nothing that is more undefined than space. It reveals so much about our creator. The ocean is definable. It is confined. Space seems scary big. Really, I don’t think I would like either very much because you have to be in such confined spaces in order to exist there. I don’t like the thought of that at all.
Do you have any pets?: Toby. He is our shar-pei that has no wrinkles. Recently, he has been digging a little, but he is such a good dog. I love most dogs, but Toby is the best! No offense to any dog owners.
Spouse?: Lecia is the love of my life. Aside from Jesus, Lecia knows me the best. She challenges me to be the best I can be and is there for me. She is my confidant, my love, my joy. When God introduced us, he began creating an eternal team. I can’t describe the intense desire I have to be with her. Even now as I am typing, there is no where I would rather be than with her. I pray daily that God will bond us closer together and will give us the love, desire, passion, friendship, and unity that he has with the father and the holy spirit.
Kids?: Emercyn is the newest and greatest gift that the Lord has blessed us with. As I have learned how to change a diaper, deal with doctors appointments and shots, put together a diaper bag and assemble toys to be used at a future date, make a bottle and give medicine, I have also been the recipient of smiles that melt stress away, laughter that gives meaning to this world, and eyes that change your life. Being a dad brings new understanding to who I am in God as well, how he loves and what he wants for me. What an amazing gift. What an amazing God.
